Fumage

 Smoke painting is an artistic process formally known as Fumage.  Where candle smoke or fumes are the medium.   A candle is held, twisted and turned to grab the smoke on the canvas or wood surface of choice with the substrate that is held above the candle.   It's tricky!  Using a delicate brush and fine eraser, the image comes alive by gently being 'lifted' out using these tools.  The soft values of the smoke can give the image a three dimensional feel to it.  Cindy currently makes her own special candles from beeswax designed with double and triple wicks to achieve the desired effects.  Needless to say her studio smells pretty sweet and a little smokey.
